Child and Youth Worker

This is a Full-time position in Nepean, ON posted April 28, 2021.

The Child and Youth Mental Health Program (CYMHP), McMaster Children’s Hospital, is a mental health service for children and youth 0 -18 years who have serious and complex mental illness with significant associated psycho social impairment.

Affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences and Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, McMaster University and the Offord Centre for Child Studies, CYMHP currently receives approximately 1,000 referrals and provides approximately 6,000 visits annually.

Referrals to CYMHP are coordinated through Central Referral, the entry and triage point for the program.

Within the Child and Youth Mental Health Program, the Outreach Service provides specialized mental health assessment and treatment for children and youth 0 -18 years of age, living in South Central Ontario.

Consultation, second opinion, bridging, and treatment services are provided as indicated to those requiring more specialized service than available from the local provider.

This service also operates an urgent access clinic, assessing high acuity/urgent referrals to the program, many querying likely admission to the inpatient unit.

The Child and Youth Worker (CYW) functions as a valuable member of the interdisciplinary team and provides care to children and youth with complex mental health issues.

Solid knowledge and skills include but are not limited to: mental status examination, crisis management, establishment of effective therapeutic relationships, utilization of developmentally appropriate approaches, and implementation and evaluation of various therapeutic interventions.

The CYW offers support, education, and coaching to patients and families.


Diploma in Child and Youth Counseling or Degree in Child and Youth Care 2.

Current Full – Professional Certified Membership with the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Counselors 3.

Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) preferred 4.

A minimum of 2 years child and youth mental health inpatient experience 5.

Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and evaluating individual and group programming 6.

Demonstrated skill in effective crisis management 7.

Demonstrated knowledge and skill in Child and youth mental health services 8.

Demonstrated knowledge in developmental psychology and psychopathology 9.

Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Substitute Decisions Act, Health Care Consent Act, and Personal Health Information Protection Act 10.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and establish therapeutic relationships with clients and team members 11.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team 12.

Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning 13.
